Originally published in the Summer 1991, Volume 4, Number 2 issue of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology LINCOLN LABORATORY Journal, this is a copy of the offprint given to the author of the article (and from his estate).

"During the period of June 1958 through September 1965 Lincoln Laboratory engaged in a reentry measurements program that developed radar and optical instrumentation for observing the phenomena asscoiated with the hypervelocity reentry of payloads into the earth's atmosphere. This article describes both the Lincoln Laboratory effort and the development and launching of reentry test vehicles by NASA." (abstract).
