About This Item
London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson [0-297-76663-5] 1974. (Hardcover) 292pp. Very good, no dust jacket. Top edge stained blue. Diagrams, maps, bibliography, index. The spine and edges of the covers are faded, there is a previous owner's book plate and pencil notations on the front endpapers. "Professor Duby's intention is the same as the warriors' and peasants' whose activity forms the subject of this book: to explore difficult terrain with a view to mastering it. Warriors sought to conquer with the sword; peasants with the plough. An economic historian's weapons are often no less crude, for the documentary records surviving from the early medieval period are scanty and problematic". Time Period 10th Century, 11th Century, 12th Century, 7th Century, 8th Century & 9th Century. (Economics, Economics, History--Europe, Peasants, Warriors).
