About This Item

London England: Macmillan, 1956. Hardback. Foxing to end inside covers. Message to previous owner to inside cover. Wear and tear to D/J. Price clipped. This book is the first of the two volumes which the author is devoting to the history of this remarkable family. Here he tells the story of its rise from its Dorset beginnings to the death of the famous Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, in the mid-eighteenth century. The book offers the reader much that is new. In particular, it includes a full biography of the original Sir Winston Churchiull, the Cavalier Colonel who fought in the Civil War; it describes his career as a Court official, in ireland, and as a House of Commons man. There is a fuller portrait that has appeared befroe of his daughter Arabella, mistress of James, Duke of York: her son, the Duke of Berwick, became the finest soldier in Europe after his uncle, the Duke of Marlborough. There are sketches of Marlborough's sailo-brother, Admiral Churchill, and of General Charles Churchill, who commanded the infantry at Blenheim. The book offers a fascinating picture of the rise of an English family from simple origins, through the vicissitudes of war and revolution, personal loves and political feuds, to European fame and an undying place in the nation's history. The illustrations consist of numerous full-page plates. 420 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.). Reprint. Cloth. Very Good/Poor. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Harback.
