About This Item
Montreal: Centre Canadien d'Architecture/Canadian Centre for Architecture, 1993. First edition thus. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. 135pp. Oblong quarto [25 x 30.5cm]. Maroon cloth with title stamped in silver on spine and front board. In a mildly soiled dust jacket with one 1.5cm closed tear. Featuring a seven-page accordian fold reproduction of "Panorama of San Francisco from California Street Hill (1878)," originally a set of 13 albumen silver prints. Initially printed in 1933 by the Stinehour Press.
Eadweard Muybridge was noted for his photography of the American West. He sought to display the passage of time in photographic form, a valid pursuit in quickly developing 19th century San Francisco. Ultimately, this interest led to "The Horse in Motion," the first example of chronophotography and an instrumental, initial step in the development of motion pictures.
