About This Item

London, Robert Bowyer for Thomas Daniell, 1800. . Original hand-coloured aquatint engraving on Whatman wove paper for Oriental Scenery, sheet size 73 x 54.5 cm, image size 45 x 60 cm. Colours clean and bright, full margins, browning to right margin outside of image, otherwise in good condition.
'This assemblage of rocks has been long considered as one of the most sacred places on the River Ganges, and much resorted to by the religious Hindoos, not only for its reported sanctity, but on account of a much celebrated figure of Narayan, over which is erected a building, probably, either to honour or preserve the idol. There are several other figures of Narayan to be seen here, as well as those of Seeva, Vichnou and Sooroj' (Journal of William Daniell).

Thomas Daniell (1749–1840) and his nephew William Daniell (1769–1837) travelled extensively in India between 1786 and 1793. On their return to Britain they produced many paintings, drawings and prints based on the sketches they had made while travelling. The 144 aquatint prints, collectively known as Oriental Scenery, represent the single largest and most impressive project by English artists to depict Indian architecture and landscape.
