Erich Stegmann was one of the really remarkable men of the 20th century - a true hero of his time. As a small child in Darmstadt he lost the use of his arms through polio. Such was his determination to overcome his disability that, having taught himself to paint with mouth-held brushes, he became a professional artist. In 1956 his dream of a co-operative to enable such artists to achieve independence through the collective marketing of their work was realised in the form of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists.
