Tipped-in portrait frontispiece. Limp green leather covers, with gilt lettering on front cover. Page dimensions: 178 x 117mm. After an address by Rev. Waddell to Sunday School workers in Dunedin, at which A. H. Reed "who lives in a sort of Sunday School watch-tower" was present in the audience, Reed encouraged Waddell to write this text. Contents: The Power of Love; The Power Dependent on the Object; Love the Dynamic of Service; The Tests of Love; How Love is kept Vivid and Vital. "Love. We all lovers. [. . .] St. Paul calls it the greatest thing in the world; greater than eloquence, or knowledge, or gifts of healing, or the power of working miracles, or even faith itself." - page 9. "Dr. Guthrie one day met a barefoot little girl in the Canongate, struggling along with a baby. He said to her 'That's a very heavy burden for you, my lassie.' She replied, 'Na, he's ma wee brither.'" - page 18. "Heine has a fine lyric of an awkward, listless and solitary wight who suddenly becomes transfigured with nobleness and strength by the approach of his lady-love; and when she disappears he sinks back again to his old proportions. It is an allegory of what love to Christ will effect when it is present, and of what will happen if it should never be, or, having once been, dies out." - page 19. Includes quotes from Socrates, Buddha, Tennyson, George Eliot, Dr. Crane, F. W. Boreham.
