ELIENS (Titus), GROOT (Marjan) and LEIDELMEIJER (Frans), editors:
Dutch Decorative Arts 1880-1940.
Kingston: Battledore Ltd., 1997.
Profusely illustrated with 150 color and 75 black/white photographs by award-winners Erik & Petra Hesmerg.
Large 4to, 256pp; red cloth boards lettered in black, full-color pictorial paper dust-jacket.
Based upon a landmark exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), this translation of their catalogue (simultaneously printed) is the first comprehensive study in English of the modernist Dutch decorative arts featuring Nieuwe Kunst (aka Dutch Art Nouveau), Amsterdam School, De Stijl, The Hague School and Functionalism, a MUST HAVE reference for everyone interested in European decorative arts of this period. The book is divided into thematic essays by prominent decorative arts scholars in the field discussing the application of these movements to ceramics, glass, jewelry, furniture, metalware and sculpture. Especially useful is a biographical dictionary and lexicon appended at the end with details about architects, designers, artists, manufacturers and associations involved in Dutch decorative arts and industrial design from 1880 to 1940, with cross-references to related citations.
