About This Item

Lavenham, Suffolk, UK: Eastland Press. Very Good/Very Good. 1973. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo 0903214032 Dust jacket complete but unclipped, sl. wear to edges. No Marks or Inscriptions. Green cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. The Dunlop Book of the World Cup traces the history of this coveted trophy since the inception of the competition. The possibility of a World Cup tournament was aired at the inaugural meeting of the Federation Internationale de Football Associations in May 1904, but the first competition was not played until 1930 at Montevideo in Uruguay. Once again, David Guiney has written a highly entertaining series of short stories - more than 300 in all - covering the years from 1930 to the memorable festival of football at Mexico City in 1970. Anecdotes concerning the loss of the actual Cup itself, Bobby Moore's detention after an allegation of shop-lifting in Mexico, the three-day war between Honduras and El Salvador, and the dramatic final between England and West Germany at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 30th July, 1966, when England finally won after extra time all these are included, together with many statistical details. .
