Rare first edition of "In Dubious Battle" by John Steinbeck with its very scarce dust jacket. 1936 1st Edition Thus (first edition by this publisher), 1st Printing; Blue Ribbon Books; New York. The dust jacket comes in a clear protective sleeve (not shown). A unique, hard-to-find edition for the Steinbeck collector.
IN DUBIOUS BATTLE
At once a relentlessly fast-paced, admirably observed novel of social unrest and the story of a young man's struggle for identity, In Dubious Battle is set in the California apple country, where a strike by migrant workers against rapacious landowners spirals out of control, as a principled defiance metamorphoses into blind fanaticism. Caught in the upheaval is Jim Nolan, a once aimless man who find himself in the course of the strike, briefly becomes its leader, and is ultimately crushed in its service.
Condition:
Some very light soiling to the outer perimeter of the covers; light wear to the bottom 2 corner tips. Tight binding. No cracks. No loose pages. Great condition text pages - no writing or foxing; pages 223 -227 each have a stain spot at the outer edge...no other stains found; the lower-outer corner tip of the half-title page has torn off...no other tears found. Light fraying to the top edge of the spine. The dust jacket has some light soiling to the back cover; there are small tears along the perimeter and at the spine heads; there are 2 pieces of clear tape on the spine (at the upper-left edge, and at the base - see photo). (The dust jacket comes with a clear protective sleeve - not shown.)
