About This Item
London: Macmillan, 1970. Hardback. Near Fine. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in silver. Slight lean to spine, rubbed and bruised at extremities, scatter of spots to top edge, others toned, else, clean and tidy. In Bob Lawrie's gently surreal wraparound dust jacket: toned, edgewear and creasing, a little chipping to head of spine. Still, a very good copy of one of Spark's own favourite novels. In 2010 The Driver's Seat was one of six novels nominated for the Lost Man Booker Prize, a special edition of the Man Booker Prize awarded by a public vote to a novel from 1970, as the books published that year were not eligible for the prize due to a rules alteration; J. G. Farrell won for Troubles. Spark's novel had numerous lives: it was adapted successfully for the screen in 1974 (and released in the US as Identikit), starring Elizabeth Taylor and featuring Andy Warhol, while, in 2015, it was adapted for the stage by Laurie Sansom for a National Theatre of Scotland production. From the collection of Jennie Bond (1950-), the English journalist and television presenter; she was BBC's royal correspondent for fourteen years: without inscription.
