About This Item

Moscow: USSR Academy of Sciences Publishing House, 1951. Hardcover. VG- clean and tight text but with page edges yellowed to page 4; some pages still uncut; edge wear to covers. DJ worn at edges and soiled but solid.. Greenish boards with brown spine and lettering and blind-stamp decoration. This work is the first generalized history of Russian book engravings since their appearance in Russia. The author of this volume has limited in the scope of the research to only book engraving, leaving aside landscape and other engravings. All these varieties of prints deserve their own special consideration.
The book examines the relationship between painting and seal engraving and printing technique in Moscow in anonymous editions of the XVI century, along with publications of Ivan Fedorov and his immediate successors, and the woodcut in the Russian book of the XVII century. Also included are copper engravings and a summary of Russian portrait engravings of the XVII century. Text in Russian.
