About This Item

New York: J. Gould, for F. Warne & Co, n.d. Third Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 24mo 5" - 6" tall. The remainder of the sub-title reads, "The Whole Interspersed With Notes by Joseph Gould. With an Appendix Containing Corrections and Improvements of Play Compiled by J. Richards, Penzance. Undated, but the reprint house D. McKay published an identical-looking copy in 1895, thus is likely also 1895. This is an uncommonly pretty little volume, if undated, bound most handsomely in burgundy cloth over boards, blind-stamped borders thereto, front and rear, but a lovely gilt-stamped checkers-board to front cover, with "Payne" lettered there, with "black" and "white" players designated, and with "Black to move and win" stamped underneath the "white" label. All edges stained in red, very slight rearward cock to spine, protected now with a stiff Mylar coat. 378 pp. + a full name index and list of other checkers-related items sold by the publisher.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
