About This Item

London: T. Becket, 1777. First Collected. Near Fine.

George Colman (1732 â€"1794) was an English dramatist and essayist, usually called "the Elder", and sometimes "George the First", to distinguish him from his son, George Colman the Younger He became a close friend of the most famous actor of the time, David Garrick, and also was a friend of James Boswell This set was the first collected edition of his plays

12mo, 4 vols [(1) 292 pp (10)] [(1) 294 pp], [(1) 324pp], [(1) 348 pp] All half-titles present

Attractively bound in 19th c full red levant, gilt all around Marbled endpapers, The bindings are not signed but appear to be of excellent quality There are a few very small chips on edges and a few corners are slightly bumped The text is quite clean for its age, with only very occasional foxing Overall, just about as clean and bright as one could hope for a set of this vintage

292, 294, 324, 348 pp.
