James Laver explores the theatrical scene and and décor from early Greek and Roan times to the twentieth century, showing the theatres of Athens and Pompeii, the early platform stages, the Florentine pageants, and the Caroline masque, as well as illustrating the work of of such figures as Inigo jones, Berain, Boquet, and Gordon Craig. A rare presentation copy of this volume, inscribed by the author to 'Uma' and signed on the front free endpaper, dated 1952. The first edition of 1951. Richly illustrated with two hundred and sixteen plates. Collated, complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only. Inscribed by the author to 'Uma' and signed on the front free endpaper, dated 1952. The dust wrapper is unclipped and smart with some shelf wear and edge wear, a minor closed tear to the front wrap, and some minor chipping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Richly illustrated with two hundred and sixteen plates. Collated, complete. Fine
