Jonathan Cape, 1951. Signed by Author to front endpaper. First edition, first printing. 8vo. Red boards with gilt titles. Pictorial dustwapper. A very good+ copy with clean boards. Mild speckling to gutter hinge of boards o/w clean and fresh. Internally complete with no inscriptions. Some spotting to edges & very occasionally on prelims & on wrapper flap. The very good+ dustwrapper is complete with no loss. Some light wear to extremities. Original price of 15snet to front flap. None of the usual fading to wrapper spine. A very attractive signed copy. Rumoured to be the inspiration for Graham Greene to go to Vietnam and write The Quiet American. Lewis travels across Indo-China during the precarious last days of the French colonial regime when much of the ancient culture was still present pre the Vietnam War. Lodgings include the spectacular longhouses of the the Highlanders and introductions include the King of Cambodia and the Emperor of Vietnam.
