Color engraving during the First Carlist War, 1833-1840 during which the British volunteered to assist Isabella II of Spain against her rival uncle the late king's brother, Carlos de Borbón (or Carlos V). The Carlists supported return to an absolute monarchy. The priest says, "Cheer up my son recollect as fast as they compel you to make promises I can absolve you from them.
