Reprints a decree by Emperor Paul 1 of Russia declaring war to France, and to Spain which he considers France's ally, July 15, 1799.
In response, the Spanish King declares war on Russia, forbids trade with Russia, expels the Russian ambassador. Unique document regarding the struggle on the European continent.
Paul I (1754-1801) was Emperor of Russia from 1796 until his assassination. Britain, Austria, and Russia, which were unhappy with French expansion, were the main culprits here. Napoleon was in Egypt for part of this time, winning the Battle of the Pyramids and establishing modern Egyptology, but he hastened back in 1799 and took control of France as First Consul. His campaign in Italy, mostly against the Austrians, was highlighted by the Battle of Marengo (June 14, 1800).
Miguel José de Azanza y Alegría, 1st Duke of Santa Fe was a Spanish politician and diplomat, and viceroy of New Spain from May 31, 1798 to April 30, 1800. He left the military to take up a diplomatic career. Between 1784 and 1786 he was secretary of the Spanish embassy in Saint Petersburg and chargé d'affaires in Berlin. In 1788 he was corregidor of Salamanca, and the following year intendant of the army in Valencia. In 1793 he was Spanish minister of war under Prime Minister Manuel de Godoy. He served for three years, during war with France.
