About This Item

1581 Saint Athanasius of Alexandria Pope Mark Serapion Amun Africa Egypt Coptic

Athanasius the Great of Alexandria was a 4th-century church father who was known as being one of the greatest Egyptian leaders in Christianity. He is often best remembered for his opposition to Arius and Eusebius of Nicomedia which ultimately relegated him to exile multiple times.

His best and most often referenced work was his book on the life of Saint Anthony the Great, which appears, along with the rest of his known works, in this 1581 folio edition of the works of Athanasius. Other works found in this book include:

· Arguments against Arianism

· Episcopal letters to the church in Corinth

· Interpretation of Psalms

· Letters

o to Pope Mark

o to Saint Serapion

o to bishops in Africa

o to Christian brothers in Egypt, Syria, Phoencia, and Arabia

o to Saint Amun (or Ammon)
