A very smart and copiously illustrated copy of this fascinating study of the Age of Discovery or Exploration in 'Ancient America', by the notable American philosopher and historian John Fiske. Complete in two volumes. 'Seventeenth Thousand' to the verso of the title page, volume I, and 'Fifteenth Thousand' to the verso of the title page volume II. Collated, complete with numerous black and white illustrations to the text, and two folding maps to volume I, with a portrait frontispiece of Fiske complete with a facsimile of his signature, and two folding plates to volume II. With author's advertisements to the rear of volume II. A mixed edition set, with volume I published in 1898 and volume II in 1896. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, minor shelf wear to extremities. Slight bumping to head and tail of spine. Slight fading to spines. Slight handling marks to boards. Front hinge strained after title page, volume II. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to edges but bright and clean throughout. Very Good Indeed
