With the inscription (probably late 18th century) "Stephen Attwater's Book/ Price 10/6 / Folio 194," and his small rectangular book label on the front paste-down end-paper of volume 1; and the book label, dated 1861, of Geo. P. Tyler on the front paste-down end-paper of volume 2. Duche (1738 - 1798) was Rector of Christ-Church and St. Peter's in Philadelphia and is remembered as the minister who advised George Washington 1777 to rescind the "hasty and ill-advised Declaration of Independence." He had, in 1774, opened the first Continental Congress with a prayer, but after the letter to Washington became public, he emigrated to England, where his discourses were first published in 1779.
