There are no other copies of this edition available for sale that we could find . Algernon Sidney or Sydney (14 or 15 January 1623 – 7 December 1683) was an English politician and member of the Long Parliament. The works of Algernon Sidney, along with those of contemporary John Locke, are considered a cornerstone of western thought. Sidney's most famous work, Discourses on Government, cost him his head. However, the ideas it put forth would survive and ultimately culminate in the founding of the United States. This is the scarce first Edinburgh edition, in two volumes, of 1750. (The book was first published, fifteen years after Sidney’s death, in 1698.) One of Sidney’s maxim’s is the state motto of the State of Massachusetts. And about the book John Adams wrote to Jefferson “…the intrinsic merits of the work, as for the proof it brings of the bitter sufferings of the advocates of liberty from that time to this, and to show the slow progress of moral, philosophical, and political illumination in the world – out to be now printed in America.”; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
