Jonathan Cape, London, (1955), Ist edition. 261 pp, 8vo (8" H). hard cover in dust jacket. "...deals with the development of the High Command of war from the comparative simplicity of a sovereign ruler conducting his own wars of aggression or defence, to the heterogeneity of modern Allied High Commands. It describes the effect of present-day conditions and scientific developments on traditional concepts, notably the more direct and commanding role Political Directors require to take in the conduct of modern war, in the rise of air power and in the new problems created by the invention of greater and infintely more destructive weapons." Previous owner's (a well known Canadian Military Historian) name/date on free front endpaper, and various margin check marks/shortlines with corresponding notes on rear endpapers - all in pencil; small paper clip crease/rust mark at top of free front endpaper and half-title page; minor color fading on top of textblock and at bottom edge of spine, light browning to pages 62/63 due to laid in newspaper clipping, light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has browning, tiny chips/tears at top of spine - light to moderate edge wear, paperclip browning on front flap. Good reading copy.
