[light wear to extremities, slight bumping at lower corners, one-time owner's initials plus date & place of purchase written along edge of rear pastedown (concealed beneath rear jacket flap); the jacket has some shallow chipping along the bottom edge, minor paper loss at upper spine corners, a couple of tiny edge-tears, one tiny hole in rear panel]. (B&W photographic plates) "The first full account of U.S. foreign diplomacy during the Civil War years," this book presents "a brilliant crowded canvas of all the complex and peculiar personalities with whom Lincoln had to deal," including "Lord Lyons, the punctilious British minister; Russia's 'jovial gambler,' Baron de Stoeckl; [and] the pale and unhappy Henri Mercier from France," not to mention the "ill-assorted members" of his own cabinet, notably Secretary of State William H. Seward and Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. .
