Bonn: Eduard Weber, 1841. First Edition. . Hardcover. See Description. First Edition. 8vo. 4 volumes. Volume I. pp. XXVII, [1], 721, [1]. Volume II. pp. [6], 561, [1]. Volume III. pp. [4], IV, 659, [1]. Volume IV. pp. VIII, 336. The first part, in one volume, is titled Untersuchungen uber die Religion und die Gottheiten der Phonizier. The second part in 3 volumes is titled Das Phonizische Alterthum. Scattered mild to moderate marginal foxing. The title pages and several interior leaves in each volume contain an institutional blind stamp. The title page to part II, volume I shows some moderate foxing. A small tear on the front blank fly-leaf of volume IV is neatly sealed. Bound in quarter red morocco with gilt spines and marbled boards. The volumes contain some wear to extremities as well as a few spots of darkening; the head cap of volume three is carefully restored. Franz Karl Movers (1806-1856) was a German orientalist who taught at the University of Breslau (Wroclaw). His extensive study of Phoenician history was well thought of at the time. The first volume discusses Phoenician deities and religious beliefs. The other three volumes discuss classical and Biblical sources relating to Phoenician history and culture.
