VG-Fine/No Jacket (assume none issued). 18.5 Cms x 26 Cms. ix+419 grey marbled endpapers; an easily eraseable small early pencilled price top verso front endpaper, have spotted a single marginal line, small dust mark lower front fly leaf, slight browning to end blank fly leaves and facing inner sides of endpapers, end ones have a tiny nick to fore-edge of little significance; otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked. Bevelled edge, gilt-lettered coevrs unworn bar very slight corner bumping and clean bar a few small scattered whitish surface marks on back. A comprehensive, if surely often elementary (given chapter lengths sometimes only a dozen or so pp.) survey of everything from the beginnings (Anfange) of literature and that of 'primitive' peoples through ancient Egypt, then via 5 early Middle Eastern traditions, Indian, and Persian, Turkish, Armenian and Georgian literatures to Chinese and Japanese.
