Very rare copy in fine condition of original 1907 German Edition of poet, novelist and essayist Hans Bethge's The Chinese Flute (Die Chinesischen Flote). This uncut first edition of the work numbered 41 on papier de chine (chinapapier) was one of only 100 copies published in Leipzig by InseIverlag. The work conveys the essence of Chinese poetry of the Tang dynasty in German. Seven of Its poems became the inspiration for Gustav Mahler's Das Lied Von Der Erde (which the composer worked on from 1907 to 1910). Provenance: From the Henry Church Collection. Original soft fabric cover protected by felt cover.
