Neckargemünd: Kurt Vowinckel Verlag, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/good. Large octavo (standard size). Slight wear to edges and corners of boards. Dust jacket has more wear, with the lower third of the spine of dj missing, and a large chip at top front left of the cover. Name of former owner in ink on flyleaf. 400 p. w/ b&w illus., maps, appendices including award winners. Formed from the 1st Cavalry Division in late 1941, the division fought in the 1942 summer offensive and Stalingrad, where it was destroyed. It then served briefly in Italy, and then back to the Eastern Front, fighting at Kiev and on the Dniepr. Toward the end of the war it fought in Poland , Hungary, Slovakia, and finally East Prussia, where some units were evacuated to the west. The majority of the division surrendered to the Russians in East Prussia. Crewmen wore the cavalry yellow ribbon, instead of the Panzer pink.
