Originally published in London in 1870, this American issue is from sheets printed in London. Brewer (1810-1897) was a man interested in lists and dictionaries. Besides this title he compiled A Reader's Handbook of Allusions, References, Plots and Stories (1880); Etymological and Pronouncing Dictionary of Difficult Words (1882); and A Dictionary of Miracles (1884).
