Original calf boards with modern bonded leather spine and gilt spine title. Original marbled endpapers. A Catalogue of Books published by D. Appleton & Co., New York, and George S. Appleton, Philadelphia, on 24 pages following text. Additional publisher's advertisements by D. Appleton & Co., New York, on final 8 pages. Small bookdealer's label on front fixed endpaper: Wilson & Heald, Wilmington. Former owner's name at head of title page; possibly "Mansfield." The dictionary is arranged alphabetically, from Abb-Wool to Zinc. Contains useful information on the automaton; calico printing; cotton manufacture; glassmaking; papermaking; the safety lamp invented by Upton and Roberts; textile weaving; and wheel carriages, among many other topics. Scarce. A heavy book; for international shipping, the U.S. Postal Service requires that it be shipped by priority international. In Very Good+ Condition: leather is rubbed; occasional minor page soiling; several closed tears from edges of catalog pages; otherwise, clean and solid.
