Urbana IL: Beta Phi Mu (The Lakeside Press], 1957. (USA) Edition Not Stated. Black cloth with gilt text on spine, non-paginated. Introduction by Gordon N. Ray (XVII), Notes (XIX), plus 66 pages of a facsimile of the original manuscript illustrated by H.G. Wells. Frontispiece portrait of Wells at the time this book was written. One of "1,413 numbered copies of this book are reserved for the members of Beta Phi Mu. An additional 3,000 copies have been made for general distribution." This is NOT one of the numbered copies. A delightful story, in a comic book style, is believed to be H.G. Wells' earliest surviving narrative of any length, and was written when Wells was twelve or thirteen years of age. An amusing satire about a war between the King of Clubs and the King of Spades.Someone had removed the stitches from the King of Spades' best pants and so forced him to wear his second-best on Sunday and he blamed the King of Clubs.
