A very good original half leather binding by Harrison & Sons. 8vo. pp.24/pp.240 . Crimson morocco spine and corners over marbled boards. Edges lightly rubbed and bumped. Spine with 5 raised bands and gilt titles. All page edges bright gilt. Marbled endpapers. Original presentation label laid-down to the verso of the front board: "Presented to The Right Honble Lord Viscount Cross G.CB., GCSI. by the Master and Wardens of the Saddler's Company Fred. Wm. Porter W. Master. Sadler's Hall, Cheapside, E.C. 20th December 1895". Armorial bookplate to front endpaper: "Eccle Riggs Library". Also (loosely inserted); Original purchase invoice for Dr. Lattimore, for �18.00, dated 02/05/78 from "The Bookroom, First Floor, 10 Green Street, Cambridge..." Binder's stamp to recto of rear endpaper: "Bound By Harrison & Sons St Martins Lane." Clean text throughout with numerous full-page plates (some folding). A very good book. ** "Eccle Riggs is a country house located on Eccle Riggs, a ridge of land about 0.75 miles (1.2�km) to the south of Broughton-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. It was built in 1865 in Tudor style for Richard Assheton Cross and designed by the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley. A dining-room wing was added in 1880 by the Manchester architect J. S. Crowther. It has since been used as a leisure club." - See Wikipedia *** Richard Assheton Cross, 1st Viscount Cross, GCB GCSI PC FRS DL (30 May 1823 � 8 January 1914), known before his elevation to the peerage as R. A. Cross, was a British statesman and Conservative politician.
