About This Item

Washington, 1877.. [4],124pp. Original printed stiff wrappers. Old tape repairs to spine, chipped edges repaired. Small ink library stamp on lower portion of titlepage; inked library number on verso of titlepage. Quite clean internally. Good plus. Jackson's annotated list of photographs of Indians taken during the Hayden survey. The present catalogue was intended to "systematize the collection of Photographic Portraits of Indians now in the possession of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories, and to place on record all the information we have been able to obtain of the various individuals and scenes represented," which may include age at the time of the photograph, location of birth, and biographical details of their lives such as their tribal leadership roles, business they may have engaged in, and comparisons to Whites with regard to intelligence.
