About This Item
16" x 20" (39 x 50 cm). Oil on panel. Depicts Theodore Roosevelt on horseback, being led out of a bush camp by African guides. Signed by the artist on the lower right corner. Framed in a highly complimentary ornate golden frame. A fine original painting that was included in Seery-Lester's "The Legendary Hunts of Theodore Roosevelt," published by Sporting Classics in 2015, p. 132. A copy of the book will be included with this painting. This painting commemorates an excursion in 1909. Roosevelt was in Africa hunting gazelles, antelope and giraffes, but was really there to look for black rhino. In the essay accompanying this painting, Seerey-Lester recounts the day of the adventure as Roosevelt, others of his party and their guides set out upon receiving the thrilling tidings that someone had spotted a male rhino a short distance from the camp. The painting captures the fragile golden light of the African morning, contrasted with all the action of an excited and wary hunting party, balancing their expectations between confidence and disappointment.
