About This Item
Calcutta, Bombay and London, Thacker, Spink and Co, 1891, 8vo, pp. vi, 125, 24 (publisher's catalogue in the rear); orig. maroon cloth gilt, drab floral end-papers. Sixth edition. - A very nice copy of this early, Indian edition of Kipling's satirical verses, always regarded by him as "my first book" (1886; see Stewart-Yeats, page 19). The fifth edition by Thacker, and the first to contain a glossary for (non-colonial) English readers. - Stewart-Yeats 12; Livingston 17. -
Noteworthy is the following: the first edition of "Departmental Ditties", not published by Thacker, contained 26 poems. The second, now by Thacker, had 31 poems, and the third had 41 poems. The subsequent fourth edition (1890), like the fifth and sixth, contained 50 poems. -
Very light rubbing at top and foot of spine and the sharp ringht-hand corners; name and 1891 date in ink at top of half-title page, but in fact, a very nice, bright copy of the book. - [Extra shipping cost for all destinations out with Europe]
