About This Item

London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1867. Pp. [iv]+276(last colophon); cr. 8vo; pink cloth, decorated in blind, the spine lettered in gilt, edges of boards a trifle faded, the spine faded to light brown; uncut; early inked signature (R. M. Fitzgerald), dated 1871, at head of title page, the title and colophon pages lightly browned, a few faint spots of foxing; Smith, Elder and Co., London, 1867. First edition. Shepherd 139; Van Duzer 48. *Thackeray's last work, originally serialised in the Cornhill Magazine, Volume IX , from March to June 1864, but left unfinished at his death. (He was working on proofs the night before he died). The Notes on Denis Duval at the end of the book are by Frederick Greenwood, who succeeded Thackeray as editor of the Cornhill Magazine. 'The story breaks off as his life ended - full of vigour, and blooming with new promise like the apple-trees in this month of May: the only difference between the work and the life is this, that the last chapters of the one have their little pathetical gaps and breaks of unfinished effort' [p. 255].
