About This Item

London & Toronto: Walter Scott, 1888. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A first British edition of this political work by celebrated American poet, Walt Whitman. Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was an American poet and journalist. 'Democratic Vistas' is considered an early example of comparative politics. The work was written whilst Whitman was working as a government clerk. Whitman argued that literature was the key to the political moral crisis. Whitman was considered rather controversial in his time with many unhappy with the overt sexuality present within his work, particularly his collection of poetry 'Leaves of Grass'.Part of The Camelot Series. The first UK edition, first published in the USA in 1871.With publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. In a full cloth binding. Externally very smart, minor bumping to the tail of the spine and extremities. Two ownership inscriptions to the half title page, one crossed out, annotations to the rear endpaper and page 134. Internally firmly bound, pages bright and clean. Very Good
