New York: Henry Holt, 1948. Later printing. Hardcover. Very Good. Hesse's lovely classic about the coming of age and the development of consciousness. For me, it was one of the books which actually carried me from the selfishnesses of youth, to the higher selfishnesses of adulthood. I cherish how powerful an effect this little book of Hesse's had upon me. Black cloth with gilt lettering to front board and spine. Bright, tight copy with slight spine lean.
Synopsis
Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth is a bildungsroman by Hermann Hesse, first published in 1919; a prologue was added in 1960. Demian was first published under the pseudonym "Emil Sinclair", the name of the narrator of the story, but Hesse was later revealed to be the author. The novel was written in just three weeks.
