About This Item

Berkeley, Calif: Bet Alpha Editions, 2007. 4th revised printing. Original royal blue cloth in slipcase, folio, 2 volumes: [ca 100] + [2] + 67 + 57 pages. Volume II, of approximately 100 pages, is entirely color illustrations ; 36 cm. Text of the Haggadah [Vol I] in Hebrew; Commentary [Vol II] in English and Hebrew.
Not to be confused with the more common 1-volume "Standard Edition." [2]-page paper-cut print of "Let all who are hungry, come and eat!" is laid into Vol I.
"The Moss Haggadah has been called one of the most significant haggadot of our time....Printed on fine, 185-grain paper and bound in blue cloth with gold stamping, The Moss Haggadah is in Hebrew with a page by page English commentary by the artist. The commentary contains not only a guide to understanding the artist's images, but it also offers insights and discussion points" (The Jewish Museum). "In 1983, David Moss was commissioned to produce an individual, hand-made haggadah, in the tradition of the medieval illuminated manuscript. On its completion, it was so well received by all who saw it, that its owner, Richard Levy, graciously agreed to allow David to reproduce the work as a facsimile edition....The haggadah is in two volumes, one volume containing the body of the haggadah and another containing David's introduction and commentary on the work. This commentary is an extraordinary teaching and study piece on the meaning of Passover. These haggadahs, which are in all the large collecting libraries and private collections" (The Publisher).
Artist's note to this newly revised fourth printing:"Just as the last copies of the facsimile edition are being acquired, we are pleased to be able to produce these enhanced versions of the trade and deluxe editions. Advances in printing technology have enabled us to improve the fidelity of the reproduction in both finer detail and superior color. I executed the original manuscript on animal vellum, whose characteristic translucency allows traces of the writing and art from the opposite side to be visible. In the facsimile edition we went to great efforts to reproduce this effect accurately. The first printings of the trade edition, too, reveal the show-through. This has proven distracting to some readers, so I decided to eliminate the show-through in this new printing. It is with great gratitude that I realize the trade edition of this work has entered its fourth printing. A quarter of a century after I began it, it now joins the other Haggadah quartets, like the four cups of wine, the four questions, and the four children!" SUBJECT(S): Haggadot -- Texts.
