About This Item

Frassinelli Tipografo-Editore, Torino., 1933. First Italian edition. A translation by Cesare Pavese of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. pp xxviii, 377. Prefazione di Alberto Rossi. Original green boards with decoration in white on upper cover. (Slocum D63). The translation was made from the 1924 French Dedalus\i0. When some years later Pavese was asked to translate Ulysses he declined, saying, "Any translator would jump with joy at such luck. But I am an old fox, and know that Joyce is never translated well." In truth, though, Pavese was not particularly fond of Joyce's work. Contemporary (1933) ownership inscription on half-title. A few pages have a crease across their upper sections (production fault). Spine slightly darkened. Very good indeed. No dustwrapper.
