Conde Nast Books / Random House, New York, 1989. First Edition. Hardcover (1/4 Boards 3/4 Illustrated Boards). Very Good/Very Good. Illustrator: Mark Hampton. Introduction by author. The text is illustrated in colour and in black-and-white by the author's own illustrations. 1/4 green coloured cloth covered backstrip with gilt coloured titles. 3/4 illustrated boards, again by author, mimicking a old-fashioned wallpaper, with black coloured titles to the front panel. Illustrated dustwrapper, same illustration as the underlying boards, with green coloured titles to the front panel and white coloured titles to the backstrip. The author was one of America's foremost decorators, and, for many years wrote a column in regards to decorating in House & Garden Magazine. This book is a synthesis plus expansion on those columns. The book is divided into seven sections – Colours – what works where and why; Elements of the house e.g. mirrors, fireplaces; Styles – of modernism and classicism; Plans – on how to arrange furniture et cetera; Rooms – discussion of the various rooms in the house; Outdoors – how to bring the outdoors indoors & Materials – what you work with. Rubbing of the book corners and backstrip edges. Like tanning and foxing of the textblock edges. Offset tanning and foxing of the end pages; with age toning of the pages.
