With Sketches of Rio Janeiro, Valparaiso, Lima, Honolulu, and San Francisco. First Edition. In black blind stamped boards, with gilt illustration of ship on front board, and gilt titles to spine. Boards are slightly rubbed. Frontis and title are heavily foxed. The rest of the pages lightly foxed. An important historical account of the post-war voyages of the USS Congress. Frontispiece portrait of Commodore Stockton, plus four colour plates. Howes' C624 makes this the first issue as it has printed endpapers (advertisements); these are blank endpapers in later issues. Small previous owner name and date to front. Complete with map on page 12. 490 pages. Foxing throughout. 190 x 135 mm (7½ x 5¼ inches). Titre long : L'histoire d'une croisière à bord de la frégate américaine Congress vers la Californie. Avec des croquis de Rio Janeiro, Valparaiso, Lima, Honolulu et San Francisco. Première édition. Dans des cartons noirs estampillés à l'aveugle, avec une illustration dorée du navire sur la première page, et des titres dorés au dos. Les planches sont légèrement frottées. Le frontispice et le titre sont fortement roussis. Le reste des pages est légèrement roussi. Un important récit historique des voyages d'après-guerre de l'USS Congress. Portrait du Commodore Stockton en frontispice et quatre planches en couleur. Howes' C624 fait de cet ouvrage la première édition car il comporte des pages de garde imprimées (publicités) ; ces pages de garde sont vierges dans les éditions ultérieures.
