About This Item

London: Michael Joseph Ltd. , 1952. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". Peter Rudland [cover]. The first edition of this novel on the 'thuggee' movement in India by John Masters, in the original dust wrapper. The first edition. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper. The second novel from John Masters, a British author and officer of the Indian Army. This historical novel focuses on the 'Thuggee' movement (organised crimes acted out by thugs) in India during British rule and follows the main character, William Savage, as he infiltrates the thuggee society. Savage is loosely based of William Sleeman who historically started a campaign against the thuggee cults. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally excellent with a slight lean, very minimal fading to the spine and very minimal shelf wear. Offsetting to the endpapers. The wrap is smart with marks to the rear, the odd chip and closed tear and light spotting. Marks and light spotting to the verso. Internally firmly bound with very lightly age toned and clean pages with only the odd very minor spot. Near Fine
