About This Item
Los Angeles: D. A. Hufford & Co., 1902. Second edition (published same year as the first and exactly the same; probably just a second printing or perhaps just a sales ploy). Twelvemo. 43, [1, publisher's ads] pp. plus 17 full page photographic illustrations and one plate. Publisher's stiff green wrappers with black lettering. Nicely bound into green cloth with gilt spine lettering. Gutter margin with placement holes for 3-ring binder. Very clean and attractive.A very early account of a trip to Death Valley. Edwards discounts it as 'apocryphal' but there can be do doubt that the trip was taken. The author and his party entered Death Valley by way of Saugus, Antelope Valley and Randsburg. While perhaps some of Swamper Ike's tales may have been fanciful the details of their route and watering holes are not. We also must commend Hufford for his early early attitudes of conservation: ""There has been a great deal of talk the last few years about turning water upon the desert and cutting it up in 40-acre ranches. It should not be done!.. The desert never should be reclaimed".
