About This Item

Cambridge: Printed by J. Bentham, Printer to the University, [1759].. 20pp. Quarto. Somewhat later plain drab wrapper. Some marginal browning to the last three leaves, otherwise near very good. First edition of the author's first separate publication, a Seatonian Prize Poem. Porteus, the child of Virginia planters who returned to the UK due to his father's health and financial stress, is well-remembered for his active opposition to the West Indian slave trade. He served successively as Bishop of Chester and of London, and his 1783 Anniversary Sermon before the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts challenged the abuses in the Codrignton Plantations in Barbados and marked him as among the sternest of critics of the practice of slavery. This poem was occasionally reprinted in the various editions of his clerical writings. ESTC N471. OCLC: 33137791.
