"Thomas Wolfe was the quintessential American writer of his age. He wrote with an intensity, a brilliance, and a clarity that led the New York Herald Tribune , in 1935, to describe him as 'unique, an individual voice crying out in the wilderness of America.' . . .

But perhaps no single work gives the reader a better sense of Wolfe's character as a man or as a writer than 'From Death to Morning'. Individually, its stories reflect his unique narrative style; collectively, they give insight into the themes that compelled him to write throughout his life. Wolfe himself was enormously proud of this collection. He believed that it supported the critics of his day, who compared him to Melville and Twain, Thoreau and Anderson. It was, in addition, one of the works that would lead Faulkner later to say that, among modern American Writers, he 'rated Wolfe first. . . . He tried hardest to say the most.' "
