First edition hardcover with dust jacket, published by FSG, 1988. The dust jacket has been price clipped. A story by Wilhelm Grimm that was unknown until it was discovered in 1983, more than 150 years after it was written. Published here by Farrar, Straus, & Giroux for the first time here with illustrations by Maurice Sendak. The story of a a mother who sends her young daughter into a forest to ave her from a war. The dust jacket has areas of age tanning, but no tears or rips. It has been protected with a clear, removable cover. Blue-gray cloth covered boards with the author and title imprinted on the spine in gold, as well as a tree design blind stamped on the front board. Boards are flat and the corners are not bumped or creased, no edge wear or fading to the boards. Un-paginated, approx. 34 pages. An oblong book - 9-1/2" X 8-3/4". There is a Christmas gift inscription on the title page, about 1" X 1", and what looks like a coffee stain on the bottom edge of 6 of the text pages. Stain varies in size on each page, about 1" long and 1/4" deep on each page. No further writing besides the gift inscription. Not a library discard. Binding is tight and square. The attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
