About This Item

New York : H. Liveright, 1929., 1929. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st trade edition ; 129 pp. ; 26 cm. ; LCCN: 44-31160 ; LC: PS3519.E27 ; OCLC: 2430705 ; brown and black cloth with worn dustjacket ; pages untrimmed ; "'The Loving Shepherdess,' writes Jeffers, 'is the story of one who has committed self-sacrifice. ..a saint, O suppose, going up to a natural martyrdom, aureoled with such embellishments as the mind of the time permits. Incapable of taking thought for herself, she wanders the length of the coast that has been usually the scene of my verses...The other poem of some length is a species of passion-play called Dear Judas. It seems to me to present, in a somewhat new dramatic form, new a probable explanations of the mythical characters and acts of its protagonists. There is some relationship to the thought between the two longer poems of the book: the shepherdess in the one, and Judas and Jesus in the other, each embodying different aspects of love; nearly pure, therefore undeluded, but quite inefficient, in the first; pitying in the second, possessive in the third.'" ; foxing, else VG/G.
