About This Item

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Feminist Press at The City University of New York, 1985. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This portrait of American women reveals the remarkable strengths and resources of ordinary women. Excerpts from 29 diaries include miniatures of the daily life of New England families in the late 1700s, overviews of the great expansion westward, and devastating portraits of the brutal politics of the 1960s and 1970s. Including the Triumphs and Tragedies of Women of All Ages, from Diverse Classes and Cultures, Writing about Love, Work, Travel, War, Adventure, Politics, ets., in Their Own Words. To Which is added an Essay on Diary Literature and a Bibliography of Many Hundreds of Published Diaries and Other Items of Interest. Culley's introduction offers good advice not only on how to read diaries, but on how to apply literary and historical analysis to them. The bibliography is extremely thorough. Teachers of history, literature, and sociology, feminists, and anyone who enjoys firsthand accounts will want this excellent collection. 341 pages. 4 outside corner tips rubbed. Both front cover outside corners are slightly curled up. A 3" crease across the bottom right corner. 1" of the top of the front cover is lightler than the rest of the cover. I don't know if it's faded or it's supposed to be that way..
