Based on eyewitness accounts, the sinking of the unarmed passenger ship Lusitania on May, 1915, by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland, was the catalyst that propelled America into World War I. The vessel sank in 18 minutes, killing 1195 men, women, and children of 1959 aboard, amid "blundering, confusion, terror", publisher notes. The Lusitania had been promoted as "the safest ship afloat", yet crew and passengers were ill-trained.
